Respiratory rate is how fast an animal’s breathes. It is sometimes known as breaths per minute. To calculate the breaths per minute on a horse, vets need to listen to or feel for the inhaling and exhaling. For the Horse, we recommend counting over 10 seconds and multipling by 6.

Pulse is how fast an animal’s heart beats. It is sometimes known as the heart rate. To take the pulse on a horse, vets need to listen to or feel for the pulse. Count the number of beats you hear over 15 seconds and multiply by 4.
